Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall 🌈

Rainbow Reef & The Great White Wall – Fiji’s Underwater Paradise

Rainbow Reef, located off the northeastern coast of Fiji’s Taveuni Island, is one of the most celebrated dive sites in the world. Known for its vibrant coral gardens and extraordinary marine life, this reef offers a rich underwater experience that has earned it the reputation as one of the Top 10 Dive Sites in the World.

The reef itself stretches over 20 kilometers and is renowned for its stunning display of soft corals, creating a colorful "rainbow" of hues that make it a favorite for divers and underwater photographers. It’s home to an impressive variety of marine life, including sharks, turtles, schools of batfish, barracudas, and even the occasional manta ray or whale shark. The combination of vibrant coral, diverse fish species, and crystal-clear water makes it a truly world-class destination for divers of all levels.

One of the most famous and highly regarded spots within Rainbow Reef is the Great White Wall. This legendary dive site, named for the luminescent white soft corals that cover the vertical reef wall, is often considered the highlight of the Rainbow Reef experience. Jacques Cousteau himself is said to have called this site one of the most beautiful coral gardens in the world, and it’s easy to see why.

The Great White Wall is a vertical wall dive that plunges to depths of over 50 meters (164 feet). Divers are treated to an unforgettable sight of towering soft corals in shades of white and pastel hues, with the soft corals glowing in the sunlight or when illuminated by dive lights, creating an ethereal, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The current here can be strong, bringing nutrient-rich waters from deep below, which results in an abundance of marine life. From schools of pelagic fishlike tunas and wahoo to massive barracuda and even the rare sighting of a manta ray, the Great White Wall offers an awe-inspiring underwater spectacle.

Why the Great White Wall is Famous:

  • Jacques Cousteau famously praised the reef, calling it one of the most stunning coral gardens on Earth.
  • Ranked as one of the Top 10 Dive Sites in the World, thanks to its breathtaking beauty and diverse marine life.
  • A dive site teeming with soft corals, including its iconic white corals, which glow with an otherworldly luminescence.
  • Home to an abundance of pelagic species, including sharks, barracudas, and tuna, with the occasional whale shark and manta ray.
  • The wall is a vertical dive, offering swim-throughs, caves, and a rich diversity of reef life, making it a must-see for experienced divers.

Whether you’re an experienced diver looking for an unforgettable adventure or an underwater photographer eager to capture the beauty of the ocean’s vibrant ecosystem, the Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall are experiences you won’t want to miss. This world-renowned dive site is a perfect blend of adventure, beauty, and rich marine life, making it one of the most sought-after dive destinations in the world.

Dive Sites 🐠

Paradise Reef (house reef)

Located right in front of Paradise, in one direction, it is a labyrinth of lava flow

covered in stunning hard and soft corals, swarming in tropical reef species,

shallow and bright – a photographers dream! In the other is an ideal training site

with a variety of terrain to make the most of your learning experience. We utilise

this site for our night diving and you can snorkel it any time during your stay. All

our local species are represented here and the colours are stunning.

Dolphin Bay

Located 1 bay over, this drift dive is on the island wall. Resident eels and lionfish

make this a popular dive. Large fish such as snapper and trevally make regular

appearances adding spectacle to one of our favourite sites.

Coral Gardens

Nicknamed ā€˜Nirvana’ and only a few minutes by boat from the Resort, this is one

of our best dive sites. Three fingers of lava once streamed into the ocean and are

now covered with a variety of hard and soft coral species. Rays, sharks and big

schools of barracuda are the keepers of the Coral Garden. Schools of trevally,

snappers and tunas abound. It’s an overdose of everything!

Steve’s Corner

This dive site reveals a huge variety of soft corals feeding in the current. Turn the

corner and come up shallow to enjoy a large archway swim-through guarded by

the resident anemone fish and filled with Ghost Coral. Sharp-eyed divers will also

spot the juvenile blue ribbon eels here.

Tomasi’s Delight

Close to Paradise, a steep slope of hard corals hides many small treasures – dwarf

lionfish, cowries and nudibranchs have all made their homes here, as well as an

array of featherstars and sea cucumbers.

Nuku Reef (Rainbow Reef)

Drift dive along this gently sloping reef and marvel at the small critters that reside

here – Christmas tree worms, clams and sea anemones are all in abundance, along

with their resident clown fish and trigger fish.

Rainbow Passage (Rainbow Reef site)

In terms of fish life and soft corals, the sheer abundance on this Rainbow Reef site

is incredible. The top of the reef starts at 40ft/12m and gradually slopes to

70ft/21m. Covered by some very unique soft corals not found in similar form or in

this abundance anywhere else in Fiji. Well, the name speaks for itself!

Annies Bombie (Rainbow reef)

A submerged reef with many big coral bommies including the large ā€˜Annies

Bombie’. Weave through the coral and enjoy the schools of fusillias, bandits and

anthias and the occasional leopard shark

Fish Factory (Rainbow Reef)

Dive along this steep wall and meet many fish feeding in the current – parrot fish,

spanish mackerel and angle fish are all resident here. The sharp-eyed can also spot

stone fish and leaf scorpion fish hiding in the wall crevices.

Jack’s Place (Rainbow Reef site)

Situated on the Rainbow Reef, this dive site offers an immense coral bommie

covered with vibrant colours of soft coral and fish. The site is a haven for spanish

dancers, box fish and white tipped reef sharks.

The Great White Wall (Rainbow Reef site)

The soft coral capital of the world’s signature dive offers an astounding wall of

pure white soft coral. This site is definitely the world famous Rainbow Reef’s top

draw. A coral encrusted swim - through leads onto the wall from the reef top. A

dazzling myriad of colour and life inhabits the reef top. Manta rays glide past with

ethereal grace. On exiting the water from this site an awed silence lasts for a while

before an excited chatter that lasts for days starts among divers. Not to be missed!

Advanced Divers only.

The Zoo (Rainbow Reef)

An extreme marine experience! Schools of barracuda are common here,

swimming above the white tip reef sharks resting on the sand. Moral eels,

groupers and small reef fish are plentiful and lucky divers will glimpse the graceful

bronze whaler sharks patrolling the deep blue waters.

Purple Wall (Rainbow Reef site)

This is one of the truly stunning sites on the Rainbow Reef. It deserves its billing as

one of the worlds top dive sites. A solid wall of purple soft coral and more species

than can be counted. You will not want to leave!

Rainbows End (Rainbow Reef)

Soft coral heaven! Beautiful purple, yellow and red soft corals make sure

Rainbow’s End lives up to it’s name. Add in lionfish, Moorish Idols and hundreds of

anthias and this is a true explosion of colour.

Marine Life Guide Fiji šŸ‹

šŸŒ¦ļø Season & Conditions

  • Season: Mid-winter in Fiji (southern hemisphere).

  • Water Temperature: 26–28 °C (79–82 °F) ā€” most divers are comfortable in a 3 mm full suit; some even use a shorty. A 5 mm is usually not needed unless you chill easily or are doing multiple deep dives.

  • Visibility: Typically 20–30 m, often clearest in the mornings.

  • Conditions: Dry season brings calmer seas and reliable boat access to signature sites like Rainbow Reef and the Great White Wall.

🦈 Big Animals

šŸ‹ Whale Encounters (Bonus)

  • Humpback whales migrate through Fiji July–September.

  • While not guaranteed, surface sightings around Taveuni are possible at this time of year.

🦈 Sharks

  • White-tip reef sharks are regular on most dives.

  • Grey reef sharks and blacktips patrol channels and current-swept walls.

  • Hammerheads have occasionally been reported in deep passages.

🐢 Turtles

  • Both green and hawksbill turtles are frequently seen, grazing on sponges and resting under coral ledges.

🐟 Schooling Fish

  • Expect bigeye trevally, barracuda, surgeonfish, snapper, and fusiliers in swirling schools.

  • Napoleon wrasse and groupers sometimes cruise drop-offs.

šŸ” Reef & Macro Life

🪸 Soft Corals šŸŒˆ

  • Taveuni is the ā€œSoft Coral Capital of the World.ā€

  • The Great White Wall and Rainbow Reef erupt with soft corals when the current runs — walls literally glow with blues, purples, pinks, and yellows.

🐌 Nudibranchs & Flatworms

  • Colorful species like Chromodoris, Hypselodoris, Phyllidia, Nembrotha are common.

  • Flatworms add even more vibrance, especially on sheltered bommies.

šŸ¦‘ Cuttlefish & Octopus

  • Broadclub cuttlefish sometimes appear in sandy areas or near coral heads.

  • Reef octopus are seen on dusk and night dives, flashing camouflage as they hunt.

🦐 Crustaceans

  • Cleaner shrimp & coral banded shrimp set up stations on coral bommies.

  • Crabs & lobsters are more active at night.

  • Mantis shrimp can be found in rubble slopes.

🐔 Reef Oddities

  • Leaf scorpionfish sitting motionless on coral.

  • Pipefish & anemonefish (Clark’s and orange-fin) living in Rainbow Reef’s anemones.

  • Pygmy seahorses have been spotted on gorgonian fans, though rarer here than in SE Asia.

šŸŒ™ Best Dive Conditions in June–July

  • Currents: Somosomo Strait is tidal — when current flows, corals bloom and fish gather.

  • Slack tide: Best for macro hunting and photography.

  • Night dives: Cooler evenings but worth it — expect octopus, crabs, hunting lionfish, and Spanish dancers.

  • Timing: Morning dives often deliver the best visibility.

🐠 Special Mentions

  • Soft corals are the #1 highlight — Rainbow Reef is a living kaleidoscope.

  • Humpback whales ā€” possible topside encounters starting in July.

  • Sharks & turtles ā€” consistent year-round residents.

  • Macro critters ā€” nudibranchs, shrimp, mantis shrimp, and scorpionfish round out the details between the coral explosions.

  • Your proof of certification and logbook will be checked during check-in at the dive center in Fiji to confirm your level and experience. Please ensure you bring these, as failure to do so may risk your ability to dive.
  • You must be fit to dive and meet the medical standards outlined by Seaira Dives Travel.
  • Dive times in Fiji may change due to local weather conditions. It’s your responsibility to check in with your dive center upon arrival to confirm the timing of your dives. Late check-in could result in missed dives.
  • Your package price does not include surcharges for national parks, additional boat dives, night dives, special trip supplements, or dive gear beyond tanks, weights, and weight belts unless stated otherwise.
  • Taxes, levies, surcharges, and fees (such as for marine parks, government taxes, fuel, harbour fees, rental equipment, etc.) may change at any time before or after booking due to factors like weather, government policy, or operator decisions in Fiji. These changes are outside Seaira Dives Travel’s control, and travelers are responsible for any increases.
  • We recommend purchasing travel and trip cancellation insurance (including storm coverage where appropriate, especially for tropical weather in Fiji).
  • Ensure you bring suitable electrical adaptors for Fiji’s electrical outlets.
  • In case of a rescheduled booking or rebooking to a new dive operator in Fiji, any payments made for the original booking are non-refundable. Standard cancellation terms apply beyond that.
  • Travelers are responsible for staying informed about Fiji’s COVID-19 travel guidelines, local rules, and procedures, and for maintaining up-to-date knowledge of any changes regarding entry requirements or local guidelines.
  • Changes to entry requirements, such as updates to Fiji's entry policies or airline flight changes, are outside of Seaira Dives Travel’s control. Customers do not have the right to cancel or seek reimbursement due to such updates.
  • Packages do not include travel insurance. We strongly recommend that travelers purchase travel insurance.
  • The Service Provider reserves the right to operate outside the standard terms and conditions for rescheduled trips. Standard cancellation policies will not apply to rescheduled trips.
  • The Service Provider reserves the right to make amendments to booked packages before or during trip dates in Fiji due to COVID-related issues or changing restrictions.
