7 Night Itineraries
The Komodo Aggressor embarks and disembarks in Labuan Bajo. For this itinerary, the Northern part of Komodo National Park including Banta Island will be covered. Diving activities will primarily be concentrated in Sape Straits (The straits separating Komodo and Banta Island). There will be hiking in Gili Lawa Darat and also a walk to see the Komodo Dragons.
Highlights of the itinerary: Manta rays in Makassar Reef, variety of beautiful soft corals, schooling fishes such as Jacks, fusiliers, Eagle Rays, Napoleon and Bumphead wrasses, Oriental Sweet Lips, Black tip sharks, Nurse sharks, Oceanic White Tip Sharks, Dolphins, Good macro life and the The Dragon Walk.
After the last dive of the trip, guests may go ashore to see the Komodo Dragons while guided by the park rangers at Komodo Island. Dragon Walk, as it’s called includes a short walk with an introduction by the guide about the National Park and Komodo Dragons where guests will see them in the wild. Staff members will accompany the group.
Notable Dive Sites:
🌊 North Komodo in July is pure magic. Crystal-clear waters and thriving reefs set the stage for some of the best diving in the world. Expect thrilling drift dives at sites like Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, where currents bring in schooling trevally, barracuda, and reef sharks. Manta rays often glide gracefully through cleaning stations, while turtles cruise along vibrant coral walls. Look closer and you’ll spot pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and frogfish tucked into the reef. From pelagic action to tiny macro treasures, every dive is a new discovery — and if we’re lucky, even a whale shark may make an appearance.
🐉 On land, July is Komodo dragon mating season — an unforgettable spectacle in itself. You’ll witness the legendary dragons in their rugged natural habitat, adding a wild and dramatic edge to your adventure.
✨ Combine world-class diving with this once-a-year opportunity to see Komodo’s famous dragons in their most active season, and you’ve got a journey that truly embodies adventure above and below the surface.
The most frequently seen are broadclub cuttlefish (Sepia latimanus) — large, bold, and highly photogenic.
They turn up in sandy patches and coral gardens around Batu Bolong, Shotgun’s China Shop, and sheltered bays near Gili Lawa Darat.
Juveniles are sometimes spotted in shallows with rubble or Halimeda beds.
Hippocampus bargibanti & Hippocampus denise hide on gorgonian sea fans at Crystal Rock and Castle Rock, especially in more sheltered corners.
Usually spotted around 20–30 m, tucked into fan branches.
Perfect camouflage makes them nearly invisible — guides know the fans where colonies live.
A focus light and macro lens are essential to see and capture them.
Ornate ghost pipefish hover among feather stars at Shotgun and Batu Bolong, mimicking their hosts.
Robust ghost pipefish sometimes lurk in Halimeda algae beds or sandy patches.
July’s calmer seas make it easier to spend time in bays where these delicate fish drift in disguise.
Komodo is a nudibranch paradise — look for Chromodoris, Nembrotha, Hypselodoris, Phyllidia and more.
Particularly abundant on Batu Bolong’s sheltered flanks and the rubble slopes around Gili Lawa Darat.
Watch sponges and dead coral heads for egg ribbons and rare species.
Less common in the north than in central muck sites, but painted and giant frogfish do turn up.
They hide in plain sight on sponges, soft corals, or mooring blocks.
Commensal shrimp & porcelain crabs live in anemones.
Cleaner shrimp (Lysmata and Stenopus) operate stations even on busy reefs.
At night, look for decorator crabs and xeno crabs in full reef camouflage.
Leaf scorpionfish (pink, white, yellow) perch on ledges waiting for prey.
Longnose hawkfish hang out in black coral bushes.
Peacock mantis shrimp (💥 the “smasher”) are common in rubble and sandy slopes, flashing neon colors.
Flatworms glide across corals, especially after feeding.
Common reef octopus (Octopus cyanea) are regularly seen across North Komodo sites.
Look for them in rocky crevices, coral gardens, or rubble patches at sites like Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, and Shotgun’s China Shop.
They are masters of disguise — changing color, texture, and even body shape to blend with surroundings.
Often spotted hunting during the day: chasing crabs, shrimp, or small fish across the reef.
Mimic octopus and wonderpus: Rare in the north — more commonly recorded in central/southern muck sites with sandy slopes (like Wainilu).
Blue-ring octopus: Possible in Komodo, but very rare in the north. Best chance is on night dives in sandy rubble.
Slack tides: Go slow just after drift dives, when currents ease.
Sheltered spots: Gili Lawa Darat, the coral gardens after Shotgun, and Batu Bolong’s lee sides are macro havens.
Night dives: Calm July seas make them possible in the north — expect Spanish dancers, crabs, and shrimp on the hunt.
✨ Pro tip for photographers: While wide-angle dominates Komodo, always keep a macro setup ready for the “in-between” dives or second tank on a site. Guides know where the seahorses and ghost pipefish are — mention you want to focus on critters, and they’ll steer you there.
Whitetip reef sharks: Almost guaranteed, often resting under ledges at Batu Bolong or cruising in the blue at Castle Rock.
Grey reef sharks: Stars of the show at Castle and Crystal Rock. They hunt in the current — thrilling to watch them cut across the fusilier schools.
Blacktip reef sharks: Patrol the shallows, particularly around coral gardens.
💡 Tip: Best action is on the up-current side of seamounts. Divers often “hook in” here to watch the shark highway.
Dogtooth tuna & Spanish mackerel: Powerful open-ocean hunters that blast through baitfish.
Barracuda schools: Bigeye and chevron barracuda often form tornado-like swirls.
Napoleon wrasse: Huge, charismatic, and often curious — they’ll approach divers at Batu Bolong or Crystal Rock.
Eagle rays & mobula rays: Seen gliding along current edges, sometimes in small groups.
Green turtles: Frequently found resting or grazing in coral gardens.
Hawksbill turtles: Common at Batu Bolong, often feeding on sponges.
Both species are used to divers and photogenic in shallow reefs.
Year-round residents in Komodo, though peak manta season is Dec–Feb.
In July, you still have a good chance, especially at Shotgun (Cauldron) — where mantas cruise the pass and use cleaning stations.
Sightings are less dense than in the south, but when currents push plankton into channels, mantas appear for feeding.
💡 Expect single passes or small groups (1–5 mantas) rather than the massive trains of the wet season.
Not underwater, but worth highlighting: July is peak mating season for the dragons. On Rinca or Komodo Island walks, guests may see males displaying or fighting — a dramatic topside complement to the underwater big-animal encounters.
Nutrient-rich upwelling: Cooler water surges northward, fueling food chains. This draws in predators (sharks, GTs, tuna).
Stronger currents: Force schools of fish together, creating bait balls that trigger hunting behavior.
Dry season clarity: Viz in the north can hit 25–30 m, making big-animal encounters all the more spectacular.
Castle Rock – sharks, GTs, barracuda, tuna.
Crystal Rock – sharks, napoleon wrasse, eagle rays.
Shotgun (Cauldron) – mantas, reef sharks, big trevally in “the express lane.”
Batu Bolong – turtles, napoleon wrasse, reef sharks patrolling deeper slopes.

Arrival to the Komodo Aggressor will involve a round-trip domestic flight from Bali to the Komodo Airport near the city of Labuan Bajo (city code LBJ) on Flores Island in the East Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia. Since the majority of the Indonesian domestic air carriers do not participate in global ticket distribution, the Aggressor Detours travel department made arrangements with a local Indonesian travel company to provide a purchasing service for the domestic tickets on our guests' behalf.
North Komodo itinerary:
The yacht departs from the port after everyone is onboard. All guests are advised to arrive at the departure destination with plenty of time to transfer to the yacht. Once you have claimed your luggage in Labuan Bajo Airport, an agent with an Aggressor sign will be waiting for you outside of the claim area if you arrive on the charter start day.
On the last day of the charter, after check-out, guests will be transported to Labuan Bajo Airport for a domestic flight back to Bali. If you are staying in a hotel in Labuan Bajo and are within 5km/3 miles of where the boat docks, your transfer is complimentary on the charter departure date that morning.
Transfers Not Included:
Komodo Aggressor Includes:
Diving conditions in North Komodo offer good visibility, ranging from 10 to 30 meters (35 to 100 feet). Water temperatures in the northern region are warmer, around 84°F (29°C). A 3-5mm wetsuit with a hood is recommended year-round.
In addition to what you’d normally pack for a beach vacation, here’s what we recommend for your Komodo adventure:
Scuba Gear: Bring your personal dive kit (mask, fins, regulator, BCD, etc.). A dive computer is required for all divers.
Surface Marker Buoy (SMB): Mandatory for safety. Choose one that’s compact and easy to deploy.
Wetsuit: Water temps range from 72–84°F (22–29°C). A 3–5mm wetsuit is recommended year-round. Comfort and fit are key — you’ll enjoy your dives much more if your exposure protection fits properly.
Rash Guards and or skins: For sun protection and comfort between or under dives. Consider rocking a Seaira Dives rash guard (women’s/men’s).
Dive Logbook: Optional, but great for documenting dives in one of the world’s most spectacular regions.
Swimsuits: At least 2–3 since you’ll be in the water constantly.
Post-Dive Cozy Clothing: Light sweats, leggings, or a hoodie for relaxing on deck.
Light, Breathable Clothing: Moisture-wicking fabrics (cotton, linen, or quick-dry synthetics) are ideal for Komodo’s warm, humid climate.
Light Jacket or Sweater: Evenings and early mornings on the boat can be cool.
Hat: A Seaira Dives bucket hat or wide-brim hat for sun protection.
Light Rain Jacket or Poncho: July is dry season, but brief showers can happen.
Sunscreen: Reef-safe only, to protect your skin and Komodo’s reefs. Use code Seaira_Dives for a discount!
Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated while cutting down on single-use plastics (check out the Seaira Dives bottle).
Beach Towel: Quick-dry, lightweight options work best (Seaira Dives towels available).
Comfortable Walking Shoes / Hiking Sandals: For shore excursions and Komodo Island treks.
Bug Spray: Mosquitoes can be an issue near shore.
Power Adapter: Indonesia uses plug types C & F (230V, 50Hz). Pack a universal adapter.
Cash (Indonesian Rupiah – IDR): Credit cards are accepted in larger places, but small shops and markets in Labuan Bajo may only take cash.
Binoculars: Perfect for spotting manta rays, dolphins, or Komodo dragons from the deck.
Camera/GoPro: Essential for capturing Komodo’s underwater and topside magic. Bring extra batteries and memory cards.
